Geocache Description:

This is the place where there is monument of the soapery birthplace.

This is the place where there is monument of the soapery birthplace.

As for the early period of Meiji, the soap, most were import goods.
Tsutsumi-Isoemon who foresaw the increase of the home demand of the
soap made soapery in this groundin 1873.
The Isoemon's soap was superior goods. They were exported to Hong Kong
and Shanghai and won a prize, and the business developed.
A monument (a tablet) is left now.

There is a Yokohama Bridge mall nearby.
This mall is very lively. You can enjoy a downtown area of Yokohama.

The cache is a small plastic case.

明治初期、久良岐郡磯子村出身の実業家、堤磯右衛門（つつみいそえもん）は、当時そのほとんどが輸入品であった石鹸の国内需要の増加を見越して、横浜三吉町四丁目（現在の南区万世町２丁目）に石鹸工場を造りました。
そこでその製法の研究に努め、苦労の末、明治６（１８７３）年、製造に成功しました。その後洗濯石鹸のほか、化粧石鹸、香水や洗髪粉、さらにはコレラ予防の石炭酸石鹸などの製造を行いました。
磯右衛門の石鹸は優良品で、香港や上海に輸出されたり、内国勧業博覧会で受賞したりするなど、事業は発展しました。しかし、全国的な不況の中で経営規模を縮小し、明治２４（１８９１）年に磯右衛門が亡くなり、間もなく廃業しました。

平成６年には、万世町２丁目の万世ポンプ場脇に、南区制５０周年を記念し、「石鹸工場発祥の地」の銘板が設置されました。
なお、横浜開港資料館（中区日本大通３）には、石鹸工場の全図や石鹸のラベル、石鹸形が所蔵、展示されています。こちらもぜひご覧ください。

京急黄金町または横浜市営地下鉄阪東橋駅からのアクセスですと、途中にぎやかな横浜橋商店街のアーケードを通ることになります。横浜の下町風情を楽しむことができます。
