”Alhedestien mellem Herning og Viborg er anlagt på den nedlagte Herning-Viborg jernbane, der blev indviet i 1906 med det formål at udnytte og opdyrke Alheden. Banen var allerede fra starten en succes, og store transporter af mergel gav indtægter, der var med til at forvandle heden til frugtbart agerland. Togtrafikken fortsatte frem til 1971, hvor persontrafikken blev indstillet. I 1977 ophørte også godstransport, hvorefter skinner og sveller blev fjernet.
"Alhedestien between Herning and Viborg is located on the former Herning-Viborg Railway. It was opened in 1906 with the aim to exploit and cultivate Alheden. The track was already from the beginning a success, and large movements of marl gave income which helped to transform the moorland into fertile farmland. Rail traffic continued until 1971, when passenger traffic was stopped. In 1977 also freight traffic was suspended, and rails and sleepers were removed. The course was in the following years coated with asphalt and tiles. In 1995 could the then Transport Minister Jan Trojborg officially inaugurate Alhedestien as cycling-, riding- and hikingtrail. The trail-network is 49 km. and on the first 46 km. from Herning the old railway milepost are restored with one stone for each 200 meters. These milestone we use to identify the individual caches.
At each end of the track there is a bonus cache (one in Viborg and one in Herning). To find these you must gather clues in some of the caches along the Alhedestien. So keep your eye open and remember to write down the hints.”
