Villa Il Gioiello (Villa
Galileo)
Villa il Gioiello, chiamata anche Villa Galileo, è una villa di
Firenze in via del Pian dei Giullari in bella posizione sulle
colline fiorentine di Arcetri, celebre per essere stata una delle
residenze di Galileo Galilei, che vi visse dal 1631 fino alla
morte, nel 1642.
Il nome Gioiello le fu dato grazie alla sua favorevole posizione
sulle colline di Arcetri, vicino alla Torre del Gallo.
Questa residenza in affitto venne consigliata a Galileo dalla
figlia Suor Maria Celeste (nata Virginia), che era monaca
francescana nel convento di San Matteo in Arcetri con la sorella: i
campi del convento e della villa infatti erano confinanti.
Qui Galileo visse dopo l'abiura (1633), confinato agli arresti
domiciliari, e subì il sopravvenire della cecità (1638),
continuando però a scrivere alcune delle sue opere più
rilevanti.
Oggi appartiene al Dipartimento di Astronomia dell'Università di
Firenze e un lunghissimo restauro, iniziato nel 1986, si è concluso
nel 2008. E’ normalmente chiusa al pubblico tranne occasioni
particolari.
Galileo a Firenze ha vissuto anche in altre due residenze

deciso di creare questa cache tempo fa venendo in possesso del
geocoin “Villa il
gioiello” che mi ha spinto a visitare questo posto e che
adesso, almeno per un po’, potrà abitare presso la sua villa,
poi decideranno i geocachers!

Villa il Gioiello, also
called Villa Galileo, is a villa in Florence in Via del Pian dei
Giullari in a beautiful position in the Florentine hills, famous
for being one of the residences of Galileo Galilei, who lived here
from 1631 until his death in 1642.
The name Jewel was given due to its favorable position in the hills
of Arcetri, near the Torre del Gallo.
This house was suggested to Galileo for rent by his daughter
Sorella Maria Celeste (born Virginia), who was a nun in the
Franciscan convent of San Matteo in Arcetri beside the villa.
Galileo lived here after the abjuration (1633), confined to house
arrest, and suffered the onset of blindness (1638), but continued
to write some of his most important works.
Today the villa belongs to the Department of Astronomy, University
of Florence and a long restoration, begun in 1986, was completed in
2008. The villa is normally closed to the public except on special
occasions.
