Geocache Description:

This traditional cache, also known as "Imagine…what life was like" will take you on a short hike down Walton Creek Trail. Trail maps are available at the Visitor Center & the Discovery Center. When caching in any Virginia State Park, please stay on marked trails when possible, park in designated parking areas ONLY, always practice CITO & most of all - take time to enjoy & explore your natural and historical surroundings!

Smith Mountain Lake State Park has many reminders of people who settled this area of Bedford County in the 1700's. The nearby structure is all that remains from a mid 1800's building. The stone used for its construction was collected locally and then shaped using rudimentary hand tools. This structure was most likely linked to the Saunders Estate.
A photo of the nearby stone structure is requested when posting your visit, also add your best guess as to what the building may have been used for. Imagine what life was like on this hillside overlooking what was once only a creek feeding into the Roanoke/Staunton River.

This is a family friendly cache that youngsters in the group should find with ease & adults will appreciate the scenery & history of the area.

Once you’ve taken your photo – don’t miss out on the chance to log a waymark. Log onto Waymarking.com – this can be found by typing in Lonely Chimneys or Walton Creek into the “find waymarks:” search box.

Remember, you will not need to disturb any foundation or historical structure when searching.

Original contents: log book, pen, VA State Park carabineer, VA State Park pencil and Virginia State Park History Cards.

This cache was part of the 2011 Virginia State Parks 75th Anniversary Geocaching Adventure. This series ended on December 15, 2011. However, the park has taken over this cache so it is still active. Rewards are no longer available for this cache, but we will be launching the Virginia State Park Blooming Adventure in March 2012.
