This cache is designed to get you out in nature and enjoy a couple of hours in the woods and not have to use stealth looking for micros in shopping centers. This is not a cache for people in a hurry to complete a long “to-find” list in a day. Bring your mountain bike, plenty of water, and a good pair of shoes.
This is my first hide in an area I really like – the Paulding Forest WMA. The cache is hidden on the City of Atlanta tract of land which is leased by the GA DNR. You can find maps of the WMA on the DNR’s website. You’re looking for a regular sized ammo can hidden just as the name implies. Park near the gate and make sure not to block it. This would be a good one to pack a picnic and make sure to take plenty of water. Bring your hound dog (on a leash) as there are sure to be plenty of deer, rabbits, and other critters for him to smell. If you enjoy mountain biking, the logging road provides a moderately easy ride most of the way to the cache. The most logical route to the cache from the gate is about 3.6 miles round trip (1.8 miles each way). There probably are shorter routes for those looking to blaze their own trails and get a good workout. I rated the terrain a 3 based on the topography of the most logical route. The total elevation change from the parking at the gate to ground zero is a 200 foot descent. This cache will give you some nice rolling hills mixed with steep ravines as you approach ground zero. As a special treat, in the winter you can see more of the foothills of the Appalachians.
While in the area, venture down into the holler and visit the creek and the huge rock formations. There's an old homesite as well. Just follow the old sunken road down the mountain.
These coordinates were taken on a clear day and were averaged. They should take you right to the cache. The tree cover in the summer may provide a challenge.
There is a FTF prize worth a couple of dollars...probably a little less due to inflation. The cache contains a logbook and pen as well as some trade items. Please replace the cache as found or better. Make sure to wear hunter orange during the fall. Good luck and enjoy!
