This part of the guided busway follows the old Bedford and Cambridge Railway. The line opened in 1862 allowing passengers and freight to get between Cambridge and Oxford via Bletchley. The line escaped the immediate cuts proposed by Dr Beeching in 1962, but was run down and eventually closed in December 1967.
This area has an unexpected history which has been forgotten. The 1922 Royal Show took place on a site between Long Road, Trumpington Road and Hobson’s Brook. A temporary station with two 500ft platforms was built around the Kings Cross line, and was removed after the event. You can imagine the scene with 25 livestock trains arriving in a 21 hour period, not to mention thousands of passengers.
The cache is in a part of Cambridge where roads have never reached so you will have to walk or bike to the GZ. Stealth required - the tarmac track is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists.
