Geocache Description:

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry. Chemistry-related caches are therefore in order! This is another in our series of Periodic Placement of Elements.

Today's cache is brought to you by the elements Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen.

One time, one of our non-chemist friends declared she knew the difference between H2O and CO2. “H2O is hot water, and CO2 is cold water.” Well, no, that’s not quite what the H and C stand for in this case, but it was a good guess I suppose!

H2O is water - hot, cold, liquid, ice, steam or vapor. CO2 is carbon dioxide, which is what you exhale when breathing. Both of these are also known as products of combustion, because they are both produced when something made of carbon is burned.

In the warmer months, you might want to bring some H2O of your own on this hike!

This cache is in view of a large container of H2O. And you’ll be generating a fair amount of CO2 getting to the site! The plastic cache container is starting out with quite a variety of chemistry-, science-, and geocaching-related items inside. Enjoy!
