Geocache Description:

Choppard's Chase is a circular walk around a pretty little valley near Holmfirth. It takes in the hamlets of Longley, Choppards and Arrunden. The series includes 9 caches of varying sizes. Clues for the bonus cache are in the other caches.

The walk includes; narrow roads with no footpaths; woodland paths; and footpaths through farm land. Please observe the country code and wear appropriate footwear. If livestock are present, please supervise children and dogs well. Remember, this is the Holme Valley and valleys have steep sides!

If you are doing the circular walk, cross the stream, walk up the field, turn left onto the lane and walk through the houses, pick up the steps to the footpath on the right.

There have been various attempts to explain this place name. It has been linked with the word 'hoar-hound', a common herb in earlier centuries. Or having the same origin as Erringden in the Calder Valley and a suggested derivation of the old English word meaning 'to plough'. The only certainty is that the suffix is the old English word 'denu' a valley.
