The Denniston Incline was considered one of the engineering wonders of NZ.
The full wagons of coal (8 tons) descended by gravity and the same time pulled up the empty ones by means of a system of ropes and pulleys over two distinct stages. Over 13 million tons of coal had been handled by the incline when it ground to a halt in 1967.
Take the new interpretive walkway to the incline lookout which is near the cache. The cache is a 60ml pill bottle containing a log BYO pencil.
