Geocache Description:

Blast from the Past is a traditional cache located in the mountain woodlands of Douthat State Park. It emphasizes some of the many contributions of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at the park and explores an explosive part of the park’s history.

Douthat State Park is one of six original state parks planned by the commonwealth in the 1930s. Thanks to the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), work began at Douthat in 1933 and on June 15, 1936, Douthat opened to the public. Although Douthat opened in 1936, it was not completed until 1942 when the CCC was dissolved and the camps were removed from the parks.
During the construction of the park, blasting was common practice. This small structure constructed into the side of the bank was used by the CCC to store blasting caps. However, no dynamite was stored at this location. Dynamite was stored at an alternate location to prevent things from getting explosive at the park!

Did you notice the dynamite shed on your way to this cache? If not, use the bonus coordinates below to visit the site where the dynamite was stored.

The cache is a 64 oz. Plastic Lock & Lock ® Box. Park in the parking area for Brushy Hollow Trail and follow the trail across the swinging bridge over Wilson Creek. Stay on the trail until you get within 90 feet. For the bonus coordinates, stay on the trail until you get within 20 feet.

This cache was part of the 2011 Virginia State Parks 75th Anniversary Geocaching Adventure. This series ended on December 15, 2011. However, the park has taken over this cache so it is still active. Rewards are no longer available for this cache, but we will be launching the Virginia State Park Blooming Adventure in March 2012.
