Geocache Description:

About the cache
You are locking for a small clip lock container covered in black tape. The cache is placed on the public footpath down Carr Lane and has great views of the Grade II listed Hewenden Viaduct.

About Hewenden Viaduct
Hewenden Viaduct was built between 1880/1 by the contractors Benton and Woodiwiss. It formed part of the Great Northern Railway track that linked Keighley to Queensbury where the three Keighley, Bradford and Halifax railway lines all came together. This part of the line was known as the 'Alpine Route' because of the stunning views and the amazing sequence of tunnels, viaducts and cuttings.

The Hewenden Viaduct is 312m long and has 16 masonry columns, with each arch having a 15m (50ft) span. It is located 270m above sea level and the viaduct itself rises 38m above Hewenden Beck below. The foundations reach to the same depth in order to find firm footings as it had to be built in sandy soil. It was constructed from Rough Rock Gritstone that was quarried from nearby Manywell Heights.

Passenger services were discontinued in 1955 and the line finally closed to freight in 1965. The section of line from Queensbury to Cullingworth is widely considered to be the absolute pinnacle of Victorian railway engineering and construction. Hewenden Viaduct itself is Grade II listed and now forms part of the Great Northern Railway Trail.

Access by car
It is possible to park on the A650 but it's not recommended as the road is very busy and they don't always keep to 30 mph. Mind you, many of the nearby residents do so it's up to you! And don't forget your green cross code.

Access by bus
Several bus services pass through Denholme and stop within easy walking distance of this cache.

Access by train
You're over half a century too late!
