Geocache Description:

A cache by tormodel, gjerjs and thorhb
Up until the 1950s, dry-toilets were common in Trondheim. "Trondheim public renovation services" was tasked with emptying these toilets. The excrement were then mixed with dry soil and chalk and sold as fertilizer to farms in the Trondheim region. The fertilizer making process took place in a Pudrettfabrikk (Poudrette Factory). Trondheim pudrettfabrikk was located right next to this cache, on the grounds of old "Sluppen" farm.

ENGLISH:

Trondheim municipality bought this land from "Sluppen gård" in 1918. Trondheim renholdsverk (public renovation service) was built on the lot where the cache is. The public renovation facility included a waste treatment plant (one of Europe's first) and a hog farm. Having a hog farm made sense, since they had ample access to household waste that could be used for pig food. The farm was kept until the occupants took 300 pigs for themselves during World War two (1943).

Toilets with plumbing were seen as "the way of the future" from the start of the 20th century and onwards, but dry toilets were common up until the middle of the century, and the Pudrettfabrikk was running until the the 1940s.

This is the oldest location of Sluppen gård, a couple of hundred metres east of "Shell Bilby'n".The farm was moved to where the Siemens factory is today, in 1884.

Trondheim renholdsverk moved from this lot in the 1970s, and since then other smaller industrial facilites have been built here. This area is now known as "Tempe", but is a part of the larger area "Sluppen". The old factory, hog farm and waste management buildings still stand, but the exterior has changed and they are hard to recognize from the pictures.

Trondheim's waste disposal facility was until the 1970s located in the area now known as "Bilby'n". Today a much larger recycling facility is to be found at "Heggstadmoen" near "Heimdal".

Old "Sluppen gård" was located right outside the city limits (where the Siemens factory buildings are today) and was bought by Trondheim municipality in 1918. This area was still very rural until the mid 1940s, except from some smaller residential areas. When the new road through "Sluppen" to "Bratsberg" was finished shortly after the war, this area experienced rapid growth in population. It also attracted visitors because of "Tempebanen" (Tempe racing track) where horse races and motorcross races took place.

NOTE: The owners of nearby building have given their permission for the placement of this cache. Most employees around here know of the cache, but probably not everyone. Normal "stealth" and good manners are of course expected, but all permissions are taken care of and the nearby "neighbours" support geocaching.
No climbing or digging needed. Cache is easily accessable. Check terrain rating.

Happy caching!
