This cache is only accessible by boat until repairs are completed this year. Pigeon Key offers a boat ride to the island for a nominal cost.
Your trip to the Keys would not be complete without seeing how the connection to Key West from the mainland was made. In 1904, Henry Flagler began to build a railroad from Miami to Key West. The Key West extension was made with a railroad that would go across the Keys hopping from one key to another. The engineers came up with ingenious ways to build the bridges using a particular type of concrete brought in from Germany. The product is called Alcon and it was the only kind of concrete that could be mixed with salt water. Since fresh water was not readily available and bringing it to the construction locations was expensive, Alcon saved the day and was a better product than the concrete used today. The caretakers of Pigeon Key say that the old 7 mile bridge that touches this Key would outlast the newer 7 mile bridge built in the 1980's. By Flagler's determination to build a superior product, this 100 year old bridge still stands. There is so much history and understanding of the area located on this little Key. There is an admission/donation to tour the property and is well worth it!
