Awesome story of man vs. nature for the last 2 caches in the series!



“So, I had this brilliant idea…” So begins Georooks description of this series I call “Signal’s Portrait”. I thoroughly enjoy caches you have to think about how to get to because they are so far off the beaten path or rocky “road”.

Georooks’ description continues: “I built something on screen that looked easy enough that I planned to knock it out today. Well, on screen looks much smaller than in the field. On top of that, trail – what trail? On top of that, knee high grass in areas with big hidden lava rocks. On top of that, ankle deep mud in some areas. On top of that poison oak ridden edge so I couldn’t drop down to place two of them. On top of that, I simply ran out of steam and daylight.”

“Signal’s Portrait” is almost 1 mile wide, .84 mile high, and covers 533 acres. The rocky plateau can be a muddy mess weeks after it’s rained, 3 of the caches are not on the plateau, and there are wild pigs in the area. It’s not just a cache series, it’s an adventure!

This is a great area: huge, open, with lots of recreation opportunities. More trails will no doubt be added and existing trails improved. However, If it’s been raining, don’t bother: the red clay of the plateau can be a sloppy muddy mess for weeks. Bring lots of water during late spring and summer and always watch out for rattlers.

Caches in the series: Leap Frogs 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29, plus “High Plains Leaper, “Signal’s Portrait”, “Big Bear The True Story”, “Feel The Power”, and “Outgrowth” br /> Just for fun, try finding the series as a duathlon: Ride about 4 miles, park bike, hike to and find the caches, ride back to the parking lot. Sounds like a good way to spend a day to me.

However you spend your time in this area, there's lot of caches and scenery to enjoy. Stay safe and remember: it’s all about the journey.
