Geocache Description:

About the cache
You are locking for a small clip lock container covered in black tape. It contains a log book, pencil, sharpener and a few trade items. The cache is placed on a public footpath on Denholme edge. It is near to two stone benches, has great views of the Grade II listed Hewenden Viaduct, and is a perfect picnic place!

And make sure you wave to the houses below as X-Will or I might wave back - if we're not out caching!

About Hewenden Viaduct
Hewenden Viaduct was built between 1880/1 by the contractors Benton and Woodiwiss. It formed part of the Great Northern Railway track that linked Keighley to Queensbury where the three Keighley, Bradford and Halifax railway lines all came together. This part of the line was known as the 'Alpine Route' because of the stunning views and the amazing sequence of tunnels, viaducts and cuttings.

The Hewenden Viaduct is 312m long and has 16 masonry columns, with each arch having a 15m (50ft) span. It is located 270m above sea level and the viaduct itself rises 38m above Hewenden Beck below. The foundations reach to the same depth in order to find firm
footings as it had to be built in sandy soil. It was constructed from Rough Rock Gritstone that was quarried from nearby Manywell Heights.

Passenger services were discontinued in 1955 and the line finally closed to freight in 1965. The section of line from Queensbury to Cullingworth is widely considered to be the absolute pinnacle of Victorian railway engineering and construction. Hewenden Viaduct itself is Grade II listed and now forms part of the Great Northern Railway Trail.

Access by car
There are several footpaths that will take you to this cache. I have provided a way point (F1 - FPath1) for the path that we generally take. It's in a residential area so on-road parking is not normally a problem. The easier approach is from Edge Bottom taking the higher footpath (F2 - FPath2) but then it's not so easy to park and then walk to here.

Access by bus
Several bus services pass through Denholme and stop within easy
walking distance of this cache. If coming from Keighley, then ask for the stop near Denholme Cricket Club. You then want to walk to Edge Bottom until you get to F2 - FPath2 that takes you to the cache.
