EXCERPT from Lt. Cooper's Letter to His Father written from Ft. Concho - Lt. Cooper describes the desperate conditions....

We left our resting place about 11 o’clock on the night of July 29. At about 10:00 the next morning, due to the intense heat, our famished condition and hunger, one by one we lay down on the open prairie and endeavored to obtain such relief as one could find from a woolen blanket thrown over a small mesquite bush.

This our fourth day without water was dreadful. Instead of having the forty rational men who left camp with us, our party now consisted of eighteen madmen. I made a brief sort of speech, telling them our plans, which were to drive the horses as far as we could and killing them for their blood when required and traveling by night and resting by day.

** All hope of survival is dwindling but the soldiers valiantly struggle toward Double Lakes.

**Please proceed to Geocache GC11. Shafter’s Trail Found! The letter continues....
