Geocache Description:

Charles E. Strickland and wife Florence built this home on Academy Street in Fuquay Springs in 1925. Here they raised three girls and two sons. Because the house was ideally located for a teacherage, across from the Fuquay Springs High School, Wake County purchased the dwelling in 1925. The building was doubled in size, housing eleven bedrooms. Teachers ( male, female, and couples) boarded in the teacherage, took their meals in the dining room there, and entertained guests in the parlors. At the time the teacherage first opened, the school campus consisted of only one large three story building, which was joined three years later by the large brick structure on Ennis Street. Necessary in the early days when boarding houses were not so common, this practice of providing housing for teachers continued into the middle 1960’s. The county went out of the teacherage business in 1968 selling the house.

Several private owners made some renovations during their residence in the house; however, the building remains essentially the same outside today. The present owners, Eric and Mary Christofferson, converted the building into office rental space, changed the landscaping behind, added parking and a new back porch. Resulting interior changes included the addition of public restrooms, connection of rooms into office suites, deletion of connecting and private bathrooms, rewiring and internet connections and cosmetic restoration. The building has been placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The original Strickland family have specific connections to town life. In the mayoral election of 1931, Charles Strickland was chosen to replace Mayor Cheek, his opponent. In November of 1932, Mayor Strickland resigned the office, citing duties which conflicted with his serving. Mrs. Strickland, in her later years, ran the lunchroom in the Fuquay Springs High School just across the road from her original home.
