PinkDolphin: Stopped by to check on this one today and it was gone. It is with regret I have decided not to replace this cache since the final went missing as well. Thank you to all who found this over the years.

Varina

VARINA GARAGE & MACHINE COMPANY

When A. D. Averette and A. V. Autry returned from serving their country in World War I, they moved to this area for the express purpose of opening a business. In 1918, their building stood relatively alone in what would eventually become the row of Broad Street businesses. The right portion of the building housed their garage while the right side was a store. The Averette family lived upstairs briefly before both families built homes side by side on Ennis Street.

While Autry left the area, Averette broadened his businesses. Cutting down, the Model T auto, he attached a wooden body producing a “truck” for the rural residents. A very enterprising entrepreneur, Averette operated the Johnson Grist mill on Sunset Lake Road and a cotton gin further north on Board Street.

Fortunately, the buildings which housed the garage and other early businesses on Broad Street remain pretty much intact as Historic Varina today.
