PinkDolphin: Time to let this one go. It was reported to me someone had removed the camo. It had a good run. Thank you to all who found this one over the years. Another one bites the dust.

Geocache Description:

This is really a fire station. Please do not park in their parking lot, there is ample free street and city lot parking.

FUQUAY-VARINA FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Fuquay Springs Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1938 with A. Lee Rowland as chief. With no permanent building, the first fire trucks and later equipment moved frequently. Home was finally established in the first municipal building on Fuquay Avenue in 1951.

The need for fighting fires in the country led to organization of the Fuquay-Varina Rural Fire Department in 1954 under Chief Tom J. Bridges. Rural equipment was housed across the street on Fuquay Avenue.

Since many volunteer firemen served in both units, a system of calls/sirens was worked out to distinguish the department being called out. Clearly the merger of both units in 1972 was progressive. Having equipment housed in many locations, the 1977 building here on South Fuquay Avenue was welcomed.

The first major fire destroyed the Thompson Building on the west side of Main Street in 1916 when only bucket brigades were available. The 1946 fire on the east side of Main destroyed four businesses leaving only the Bank of Fuquay. The rebuilt block fell victim to the 1977 fire with the loss of seven businesses. Growth has now resulted in the opening of Fire station # 2 at Hilltop Road in 1991 and Fire station # 3 on Bud Lipscomb Road in 2003. Station # 1, the facility shown here here, was enlarged in 2010.

EDIT: As of April 20, 2017 this is a stand alone cache as the puzzle final was archived.
