Tour de Fuquay-Varina - Old Post Office Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

PinkDolphin: It is with great regret I have decided to archive this cache, but it has once again been stolen. I suspect because it was not replaced where it should have been. It has been a good run for this one, and the location is so awesome it is sad to archive. Thank you to all the finders over the last 7 1/2 years.

Geocache Description:

Old Post Office

MUSEUM POST OFFICE ( Fuquay Springs First Post Office)

Originally the tiny one room post office stood on the west side of the Raleigh and Cape Fear Railroad where it served the town residents who picked up mail. It doubled as a Railroad Post Office for the transfer of mail locally and to neighboring rural offices. Known to have been used as Fuquay Springs Post Office between 1902-1914, the building was owned by Mrs. Hattie Parker Jones, postmistress. With town growth on Main Street and the consolidation of rail traffic into the Union Depot, she applied to move her post office to Depot Street and the little building was no longer needed. The Jones family moved the structure several times eventually locating it at their homeplace off highway # 42. When this property was sold for development, the Fuquay Springs Quester Chapter # 1134 requested the building, secured the Town Commissioners’ support for relocating it for preservation, and restored the historic structure as a museum. Celebrating the Fuquay-Varina Centennial, this unique site opened on June 5, 2009. Among the interpretative displays within the museum are postal records. Visitors may study the history of area post offices both discontinued and current. The building has enjoyed a remarkable restoration aclaimed by all.
