Geocache Description:

WAKE CHAPEL CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Organized in 1856, Wake Chapel Christian Church is the oldest congregation of worshipers within the town today. Standing upon acreage donated by Etheldred Jones, the early membership included both free blacks, slaves, and white landholders. Two older wooden buildings preceded this first brick building which dated from 1923. Today’s white columned 1968 building acquired its distinctive steeple with chimes in 1975.

Behind the sanctuary the church cemetery contains graves of many early families. Adjacent to the property is a public cemetery created by influential citizens of the area. The Family Life Center is located behnd the main building and a private elementary school operated at the church for several years, but is not used for that purpose today.

The original “Varina Road” did not border the church but with the expansion of the railroads and growth along Broad Street , Wake Chapel Road became a primary thoroughfare between Varina and Fuquay.
