Not so long ago, it was part of Auckland’s sewage treatment station, and a rather unpleasant place to visit.
Today the area has been transformed, the sludge and oxidation ponds have gone and the area is once again open to the sea. All possible because of a new state of the art treatment station. Wildlife now inhabits the lagoon and wading birds will often be seen.
There is plenty of information at the site as to what has been done so if you are interested check out the sign boards.
The cache can be done as a short walk from a nearby car park, or a pleasant loop walk. For the fitter, it is also on the 7km long Watercare Coastal Walkway which runs from Ambury Farm Park to the Otuataua Stonefields. This track may also be cycled.
The cache is an 450ml box, room for small travel bugs or coins.
