This cache has been archived.

Blue Canary: This one has had a long run, but I don't think I will replace it. I'll archive it and give some one else a chance to place one here.

Geocache Description:

You are seeking a lock-n-lock container. You will have to park on the side of Highway 51. Park clear of the road and do not block the driveway across the street. No night caching.

On the evening of April 29th, 1863 Colonel Benjamin Grierson while leading a Union calvary raiding party stopped for the night at a plantation owned by Mr. Uriah Gill approximately two miles north of Bogue Chitto. Grierson was on the thirteenth day of his calvary raid against the Confederate railroads in Mississippi. Currently his attacks were directed at the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad, which ran through Mr. Gills Plantation. Mr. Gill supported the southern cause, but later remarked that he didn't have anything against the Union men. They didn't take anything of his except a little corn for their horses. Mr. Gill raised his grandson, the son James M. Gill. The son, Thomas Jefferson Gill, joined the Confederate army in 1864 and served through the remainer of the war.

You are seeking the cache near the Gill family cemetary. Time has not been kind to this graveyard. I remember the gravestone for Mr. Gill, but couldn't find it when I placed the cache. It should have been a small spire located near the edge of the drop off at the north end of the graveyard. Perhaps it fell over and has been covered by forest debris.
Known burials in this cemetary include:
John Gill, Jr. Born 1754. Died 26 Sept 1828. He was a Revolutionary War soldier.
Elizabeth Faust Gill Died about 1823. She was the third of four wives John Gill, Jr. had.
Uriah Gill Born 1 Oct 1799 Died 28 June 1872
Margaret Parnell Gill Died 25 March 1881. She was the wife of Uriah Gill.
An infant child of Uriah and Margaret Gill.
James Monroe Gill Born 30 Nov 1823 Died 31 July 1849. Son of Uriah and Margaret Gill.
