Geocache Description:

When this was the dinosaur museum this title was appropriate. The Rock and Rail took their building back in 2013 so the dinasour museum moved to the Canon City Historical Museum and Library. I've hidden another cache over there so you'll be treated to more/new history both inside and out. But, Now I have to change the history to match this cache.

Just to the south of this geocache is the rail yard and the depot where you can buy a ticket to ride the train under the Royal Gorge Bridge. If you are about to do that or would like to check out these Mile Markers by yourself here's some history and information.
Mile Marker 160.9: is the first prison in Colorado. Built in 1872 was first called Territorial, then Old Max now Colorado State Penitentiary. 900 residents today.
M.M. 161: an original Guard Tower and the roadside marker for Zebulon Pike who built a stone shelter there during a blizzard in 1803.
M.M.161.6: Burnito Siding where once a rock and limestone loading chute stood. Prior to that there were stock pens where cattle were loaded onto the train.
M.M.161.7: Tunnel Drive built by convicts for a Water Line into Canon City. Many geocaches all along the walking path.
M.M. 161.8 Hot Springs Resort was a popular location for the Indians first, then early days settlers. Beautiful old Resort was taken down in 1950.
M.M. 165: Concrete Pier in the middle of the river is a reminder of the hard work of the prisoners in preparation of the Water Line.

Along the way you will see the staves that were part of the old wooden water line bringing water into Canon City.
You will pass over the Hanging Bridge that was built when there was no more ground next to the river to put tracks on.
When under the bridge watch out for falling objects from above.
Look for the remains of an old trammel wash plant and sluice box, used to wash gold off the rocks along the banks. Watch for other active gold panning going on as you go along.
There are old guard shacks and caretakers cabins who monitored the water line and the rail tracks.
You may see geese, ducks, blue heron in the river and turkey buzzards in the air. Look for mule deer, bighorn sheep, black bears, and mountain lion.
Have fun and make a good memory.
