Geocache Description:

Micro located in Weldon, NC, and technically part of the Canal Trail, but at this point, it runs along town streets. Part of the Halifax 7 series. This could be considered an "evil micro" unless you read the clue (big spoiler!).

Welcome to Downtown Weldon, NC, the Rockfish Capital of the World! Don't forget to enjoy the shops and take a stroll!

Rockfish, aka, striped bass, are extremely popular here. People come from all over to fish in Weldon during rockfish season in March, April, and May. Here at the cache site, you can view a mural in a unique location by Napoleon Hill depicting our rockfish friends!

Weldon is the fall line town on the Roanoke River (where the rocky land of the piedmont meets the softer soil of the coastal plain). There are rapids here, which made moving goods difficult. Eventually, the Roanoke Canal was built to help "batteaux" (special river boats) move goods up the river. Shortly after the canal was completed, the railroad emerged as the better transportation option. Four railroad lines merged to cross the river bridge at Weldon, and the Confederacy worked hard to keep this bridge open so goods from the port of Wilmington (in particular) could reach General Lee's army in VA. I spoke with a CSX Railroad employee who said that even today, this bridge is just as important now as it was during the Civil War.

Be sure to visit the nearby award-winning (for historic preservation) Weldon Library which used to be a passenger station. Passengers had to walk up stairs to board the train way up at the trestle level. There is a caboose in the parking lot to wander around in, which was the original placement of this cache, but it was too close to the tracks.
