Geocache Description:

A little cache to welcome you to Elkinsville... What's left of it, anyway.

This humble little match tube welcomes you to the location that was once Elkinsville, Indiana. When the Army Corp of Engineers plotted out nearby Lake Monroe they had to put various little towns on a sort of hit list. Paynetown, Moores Creek, Cutwright, etcetera. And Elkinsville. A slick operative from Washington came out, posing as a city rube looking to build a hunting lodge. He asked a farmer that owned some un-tillable steep hillsides what he'd take for a few acres. Thinking the city slicker was nuts, the farmer offered him a steep hill side at a paltry sum. ($100 an acre sticks in mind) The government man then filed an affidavit stating that land in the area of the porposed lake was valued at that price. Never mind that most of the land to be flooded was prime bottom land with rich top soil. Needless to say, a lot of the people that got hustled off the property were NOT happy. Many simply burned their own homes to the ground rather than wait for the engineers to come with their bulldozers. Graveyards that were on the map were exhumed and re-located. The many graves that lay off the beaten path were lost under the water. This brings us to Elkinsville. Ooops. The surveyors were a little off. While the Elkinsville cemetery was deemed high enough to leave in place, the town was condemned. One by one the residents were forced out, and the town demolished. The damn was built. And the water began to rise. And then the lake was full. And then the water ceased rising. And the water never got anywhere near Elkinsville. The few streets are still here. One old homestead and its barn still stand at the far end of "town". The rest of the town is just gone.
Anyway, you'll find a limestone marker near where the center of town used to be. It was put up by the families that used to live here to honor their long lost Elkinsville. Near the marker, you'll find a small match tube. This is one of those caches that is set to bring you to an interesting spot. Sorry, no ammo can this time.

Good Luck!
