Geocache Description:

The Parade follows part of what was originally Lillington Lane. Lillington Lane ran from High Street, along Bath Street & Victoria Terrace, across the river up to Regent Grove, turning right, along Regent Grove & left into Clarendon Street before heading north to Lillington. The section between the river & Regent Grove was renamed Union Parade & by 1818 had been extended as far as Warwick Street. It was renamed The Parade in 1860. The first building in Leamington's "new town" north of the river, was on the north-west corner of the Parade - Regent Street junction. The first brick being laid on 8th October 1808. Twenty more houses were started the following year on the west side of The Parade, just below Regent Street. Soon after completion, the Upper Assembly Rooms were built on the south-west corner of Regent street & The Parade. The building on the corner of Dormer place & The Parade (currently occupied by Pizza Express) was opened by William Flavel in about 1810. The first hotel in Leamington, The Bedford Hotel opened in 1811. It was demolished in 1857 & replaced by a bank. The HSBC bank (opposite the Town hall) currently occupies the site. The Royal Pump Rooms & Gardens on the west side of The Lower Parade were opened in 1814. By 1814, there were about 34 houses on the west side of The Parade south of Warwick Street. The Regent Hotel opened in 1819. The buildings in the Upper Parade (originally named Lansdowne Place) north of Warwick Street, were started in about 1824, being completed in the early 1830's. The majority of these frontages are now replicas of the original buildings, built in the 1970's. The Clarendon Hotel, at the north-east corner of The Parade - Clarendon Avenue junction opened in 1830 & continued operating as a hotel until 1984. The building still retains most of it's original features externally, although it has been refurbished & extended for use as offices. The Jephson Gardens were laid out in about 1834. Euston Place was built in 1834, but destroyed by fire on 7th November 1839. It was rebuilt shortly afterwards. The Town Hall was opened in 1884, the foundation stone being laid on 18th October 1882. The land was previously occupied by Denby Villa, which was built shortly after the Regent Hotel. The Regent Hotel conversion started in 2003.
