Geocache Description:

This site was the location of Ohio's first dam and Athens County's first post office.

"After achieving considerable importance in Athens county, Ohio, as its first postmaster, associate county judge, trustee of first library in N. W. territory, trustee of Ohio University [1808-1812], [State Legislator for three terms (1811, 1812, 1814)], organizer and Colonel of first regiment in Ohio in the War of 1812, he sold out in 1815 and moved to Fayette county where he bought a tract of 1040 acres of land on which he lived for the balance of his life."

Jehiel Gregory started the first post office in Athens County at his house in 1804. He stayed in the position for only a few months. Then, in February, 1805, he - along with John Havner - received authorization from the legislature to erect a mill dam across the Hockhocking River. (Above from "History of Athens County, Ohio: and, incidentally, of the Ohio Land Company ..." By Charles Manning Walker)

A milldam is a dam constructed on a waterway to create a mill pond. Water passing through a dam's spillway is used to turn a water wheel and provide energy to the many varieties of watermill. By raising the water level so that the overflow has farther to fall, a milldam increases the potential energy that a mill can harness and use for various tasks. (Wikipedia)

The Rebecca Morris McKee Chapter of the US Daughters of 1812 placed the monument here to remember the two firsts at this site. I hope you enjoy discovering this piece of history as much as I did.

Cache is a micro container hidden nearby. Easy find, but be sure to check out the monument and the view!

Congrats to RandomRansom on another first for this spot - First to Find!
