This is a replacement cache for the "Travel Bug Hotel" that
was lost due to flooding in late May/early June of 2011.
The cache is located on former Ontario Reformatory grounds that
were incorporated into the Royal Jaycees Bicentennial Park.
Bicentennial, referring to the 200th anniversary of Ontario in
1984.
The ball diamonds here were used for a number of years before
falling into disuse due to several factors. Declining baseball
enrollment was one issue, but the land was a poor choice. The
diamonds were laid out on former swamp that was frequently flooded
and unplayable in the spring or after a heavy rain. To make matters
worse, the geese loved the outfield grass to the point that the
diamonds were coated in goose droppings. I have less than fond
memories of bringing our oldest here for some of his games!
The only difficulty you will have finding the cache is the
ground. Winter will be fine, but at most other times of the year
(unless there has been a prolonged dry spell) the ground will be
well soaked. Be prepared with appropriate footwear!
