CDC 7600 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

rragan: Sadly, the area is now fenced off to be demolished and become the site of a new Silicon Valley multi-story office complex. May God have mercy on the commuters to the new complex

Geocache Description:

The CDC 7600 was the successor to the CDC 6600. It was roughly 10 times as fast as the 6600. The introduction of an instruction pipeline helped solve the problem of the 6600's functional units sitting idle unless the code was carefully scheduled to achieve overlap. Physically, the machine was in a horseshoe shape to allow for eacy access to the insides and the outsides while keeping distances short for speed. The wood paneling and blue glass provide a designer's touch.

More details on the CDC 7600 can be found at CDC 7600

The primary software development facility in those days was at 215 Moffett Park Drive (See CDC 6600 cache for picture). Times were good and CDC overflowed available space so the building at 155 Moffett Park Drive (aka the Prudential Building) was leased for extra space. That building complex included a cafe in the round building in the middle of the complex. I recall getting lunch from that cafe and eating it on the deck. Today, the cafe is gone and the building sits empty.

The cache is a bison tube and it is not in the landscaping so be kind to plants. At least one adjacent building appears to have a tenant. You might have curious eyes during the work week but I can't say for sure since I've only visited the area on weekends when things are deserted

Congratulations to oaknest for FTF
