Geocache Description:

For most of its 132 years Louisville & Nashville Railroad was headquartered in Louisville.  In its beginning its offices were located in several different buildings downtown.  In 1857 L&N relocated their offices to the new combination freight and passenger depot at 9th and Broadway.  As it outgrew its available space some offices were moved to Main and Bullitt Streets.  L&N continued to grow and in the early 1870's plans were on the drawing board for a new home.

A four story stone combined L&N Headquarters and Ticket Office building at the corner of Second and Main Streets was completed in 1877.

By the 1890’s the fast growing company had already outgrown this facility and a new office was needed.

L&N 1877 Office Building

It was decided the best location for a new headquarters building would be adjacent to Union Station on Broadway. Construction began on the 11 story building in 1902 and completed in 1907.

Because of its continued rapid growth in 1929 the west end of this building was expanded essentially doubling its size. At its height over 2000 employees worked in this building.

If you walk around to the back side of the building the expansion can easily be seen by the color variation in the brick but what you won't see is the large smokestack as it was disassembled in August of 2011.

In 1980 the newly formed CSX Transportation consolidated its operations and moved to Jacksonville, Florida.  The state of Kentucky purchased and renovated the building in 1984.  It now houses the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.  The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

You are looking for a bison tube hidden at a location with a good view of L&N's last company headquarters building. Although the cache is located in a park like setting, because of its proximity to a busy road, this cache is not recommended for children unless they are closely supervised. Free street parking is available nearby on Magazine St.

The cache could be done at anytime but recommended during the day.  This is a relatively safe area of town to visit during the day but use caution if visiting after dark.  Remember to bring a writing instrument to sign the log and take special care to replace the cache as found so that it blends in with its surroundings.
