Geocache Description:

McRobies Gully Creek (WSSS 03)

This is the third of a short series of caches on Mt Wellington that will take you to several historic places that are not often visited these days (and that do not already have a cache nearby). The series is called Wellington's Seldom Seen Sites.

The Site

The cache is in McRobies Gully, South Hobart. It is near a long disused, much overgrown logging track. The location is quite attractive since it is next to a creek (McRobies Gully Creek) and there are ferns, moss-covered rocks and tall trees. It may be reached by following defined tracks. The area is owned by the Hobart City Council and may be accessed for example from Wellington Park.

The Hobart City Council's tip is located in McRobies Gully and as you approach the cache you will see glimpses of the tip site. You will be able to observe how the tip is encroaching into this attractive mountain gully.

The Cache

The cache is at the base of a relatively large Eucalyptus tree next to the track. It is in a small Sistema box in a black bag. The box contains a log book, pen and a few small swaps.

Please note that the general area is in a densely wooded valley that will interfere with GPSR reception.

Getting There

The cache may be reached from either of two walking tracks that are unnamed and not marked on most maps. Each branches off a fire trail (vehicular track) and these are shown on maps. For our purposes we will call the two unnamed tracks "Track A" and "Track B".

Track A and Track B both go downhill and meet at McRobies Gully Creek; the cache is nearby.

Getting to the cache via Track A
Track A branches off from a vehicular track that links Breakneck Track and Newtown Track. This vehicular track and the Main Fire Trail form a T-junction. (On some maps this vehicular track is labelled New Town Track.)

The general area can be reached in numerous ways - take your pick. (The closest approach is from Pottery Road.)

Track A branches off the vehicular track in the vicinity of "The Slides" and adjacent to an old lichen-decorated sign stating "Motor Bikes Prohibited in Mountain Park Reserve". As you stand on the vehicular track and face east, the required walking track and sign are to the right. The approximate coordinates for the branch point are S 42° 53.070 E 147° 16.440.

Follow Track A downhill until McRobies Gully Creek is reached. This is where Tracks A and B meet. Do not cross the creek to get to the cache. Instead continue about 20 metres further east; the cache is on the right side of the track.

Getting to the cache via Track B
Track B branches off from a vehicular track that links the Main Fire Trail to the tip area. This vehicular track and the Main Fire Trail form an approximate T-junction quite close to where the Main Fire Trail crosses McRobies Gully Creek.

The general area can be reached in several ways. The suggested approach is from the end of Old Farm Road Road along the Main Fire Trail. Follow this trail as it goes over a ridge and then down into the McRobies Gully Creek valley. Just before reaching the creek (sign-posted "Ki Creek", presumably a none-current name) there is an old lichen encrusted sign "McRobbies Gully Disposal Area " on the right that marks the start of the vehicular track that you need to take. Follow this track for about 250 metres. Track B branches off this vehicular track on the left side (as you face east); there is another vehicular track going uphill to the right. The approximate coordinates for the branch point are S 42° 53.298 E 147° 16.132.

Another much less salubrious and not really recommended way to this branch point is from Cascades Gardens. If you come this way keep to the right hand track.

Follow Track B downhill. You will first pass through an area where invasive weeds are being controlled by the Wellington Park Bushcare Group. Eventually the track joins a very old logging road. There may be one or two fallen trees across the track. Continue downhill until McRobies Gully Creek is reached. This is where Tracks A and B meet. Cross the creek to get to Track A. Turn right and go east about 20 metres. The cache is on the right side of the track.

Return trip

Tracks A and B are both quite pleasant to walk as they traverse a valley in a healthy forest containing eucalypts as the dominant species. Why not go to the cache on one track and return by the other? The starting points to these two tracks are linked by vehicular tracks making the return trip easy.
