The cache is located in sight of the lime kiln (stone structure
with an alcove opening on 3 sides). At least it is in February when
the tree cover is not dense. The tree cover could make this a
challenge for your GPS especially in the summer months. Hopefully
the hint will help? Also thanks to S.Burgess (the property manager)
for permission to place this cache.
Starting from the car park at Pitmedden Gardens. The Car Park is
seasonal but you can park near the entrance in a considerate way.
If you prefer? It is possible to follow the 'yellow' trail which
takes in both this cache and the 'Pitmedden Gardens' cache. Take
care in crossing the road. It isn't usually busy, but the traffic
can be fast.
This lime kiln is a 'B' listed building. Lime kilns are used to
convert limestone into lime. Lime has three main uses. It was
spread on to fields to help fertilize the soil It is also used as a
mortar for use in constructing buildings and can also be used as a
lime wash to paint the outside of buildings. The arched openings
(now bricked up) were used to feed the fire and to allow oxygen to
enter. The processed lime was also extracted from there. The fire
was lit at the base and then alternate layers of limestone and fuel
were placed on top, this was usually charcoal, coal or wood.
Tempretures of 900 degrees centigrade were needed to facilitate the
process. They burned with a blue flame and gave off a thick acrid
yellow smoke. By the 1900s most lime kilns went out of use as it
was more practicle to transport lime by rail than to produce it
locally.
