Geocache Description:

This is a sister cache to the 'Absolom Pratt House' cache (GC1N35N) located about 8 miles away close to Brierfield Park. It is a cammo taped jar located close to the pull-off parking at the Pratt's Ferry Preserve by the Cahaba River bridge. Room for small trade items.

This is fairly close to where the ferry was located at River Bend. It was used as a means for the locals to cross the Cahaba River in the mid-1800's. The Pratt family settled in the area around 1816-1818. Richard Hopkins Pratt, a son of Absolom Pratt, was a principal at the nearby Six-Mile Acadamy (where the Six-mile Community Center is presently located) and was appointed a Colonel in the militia in 1841. He died of typhoid fever in 1845. His wife lived til 1882 and operated the Cahaba River Ferry. Legend has it that rather than let the Union Troops under General James H. Wilson use it in 1865 when his raiders destroyed the Brierfield Furnaces, she let the ferry adrift. There is a short trail down to the Cahaba River where there is a small beach when the river is at normal levels. There is a good view of the shoals there and plenty of areas for picnic and wading. Be cautious...the current is swifter than you might think and the rocks are very slippery...don't try to cross over.
