Welcome to KATS! An airport code is a short code used to identify a specific airport. There are two international systems used: IATA - a three-letter code which is more commonly known to the public such as ELP for El Paso or ROW for Roswell. ICAO is a four-letter code which is more commonly used internationally. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration airport codes generally mesh with those from IATA. Those airports that do not have either an IATA or ICAO airport code are given a Location Identifier which often have mixed letters and numbers for small municipal or private airports such as with the Artesia Municipal Airport. During 1943 and 1944 this airport was used by the United States Army Air Forces as a contract glider training airfield. Big Spring Flying Service of Big Spring TX provided instruction for the students. The mission of the school was to train glider pilot students in proficiency in operation of gliders in various types of towed and soaring flight, both day and night, and in servicing of gliders in the field. The Army used primarily C-47 Sky trains and Waco CG-4 Gliders.
The training center was deactivated on September 8, 1944 with the draw-down of Army Air Forces Training Command’s (AAFTC) pilot training program. Assets were declared surplus and turned over to the Army Corps of Engineers on September 30, 1945. The airport was eventually discharged to the War Assets Administration (WAA) and returned to being a civil airport.
