Cottam Airfield Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A cache placed along one of the access roads to the old Cottam Airfield. Do not attempt to drive up here, there is convenient offroad parking available on either side of the B1249. Can be muddy in places, and it is uphill to the cache - the views make it well worth the effort.
Cottam Airfield opened in September 1939 as a bomber station for no. 4 Bomber Group Command. However, at 485 feet above sea level, air pockets made it unsafe for landing and it was abandoned the following year. This was described as "The biggest mistake of the war". In March 1944 a USAAF 24 Liberator made a forced landing here. Subsequently, in 1945, it was used as a bomb dump by 91 Maintenance Unit, the bombs being brought by lorry from Driffield railway station.
