Geocache Description:

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, East Stoke, Stoke sub Hamdon.

All the serious architectural details are here.

The original church is Norman 11C, but considerable additions have been made over the course of time, so that the church has a real strange mixture mixture of styles built up through the centuries, and all kinds of strange carvings around the outside, corbels, gargoyles and sheela-na-gigs. It has been described as one of the most important churches in Somerset, for its architecture.

Parking is on a grass verge, please don't block the gate.

Enter the porch, and look at the carving above the entrance to the church.  Let the number of the sign of the zodiac on the left = A.  Let the number of birds in the tree = B.  Let the number of the sign of the zodiac on the right = C. As the door has been locked, preventing cachers from seeing the tympanum, it is now included here.

What age was William when he died, and what age was his sister Maria when she died?  Let the number for William = 2D, and the number for Maria = 2E.

Go to N50° 57.D(C+1)E  W2° 44.D(A-2)(B-1)

In the carving of St. Michael slaying the dragon, in which hand is the spear.  If the spear is in the right hand, then F = 4.  If the spear is in the left hand, then F = 5

Go to N50° 57.DFD W2° 44.DF(A-2)

Look up and count the number of corbels you can see.  Let that number = G.  How many radials are by the door?  Let that number = H.  Head east round the church until you're on the opposite side of where the corbels and radials are.  How many Sheela-Na-Gigs can you see?  Let that number = J

The cache can be found at N50° 57.JG(H-2)  W2°44.(2D)(C-B)(G-8)

The Checksum of all digits is 47

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
