Geocache Description:

The Karaponga Power Schemes

Check out the related web page for history of this scheme. The cache is located at the dam lookout and to get to it you need to drive to the end of the unpaved Symonds Road.

The access to this cache is through farmland, so treat all fences as electric and use the gates, remember leave them as you found them.

The area is Public Reserve, however the power scheme is deemed private and comes under OSH regulations as far as access, so in other words the working parts shouldn't be accessed. The track ends just above the dam. The new scheme was shut at the time of placement due to penstock blowout.

The reserve is getting some attention as far as access development, but there is a lot more to be done and the potential for an eco attraction is definitely there. This is a new track, not well used, but fairly well defined, be aware there is a slip about half way along the track.

FTF task...had a bit of a whoops heading to this spot and lost writing stick, so if you want to log your FTF please take pen or pencil to leave in cache.
