Geocache Description:

THE PACIFIC MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY The two structures that you look down upon from the parking waypoint coordinates are all that remain of Benicia’s 19th century non-military industrial buildings. The Foundry and Engine Room of the PMSC were built in the 1850s when William Henry Aspinwall, who held the government contract for mail delivery to the Pacific coast, chose Benicia over San Francisco as his company’s operating headquarters. Paddlewheel steamers were used for transportation of the mail from the Panama isthmus (no canal yet) to California. They were maintained here. Mr. Aspinwall’s first steamship was the California, departing New York City in 1848. The Steamship Company’s subsequent incarnations were Baker and Hamilton (1879), later known as the Benicia Agricultural Works, then the Yuba Manufacturing Company (1914), which made 155 mm Howitzer cannons during World War II, achieving an “E” flag for production after achieving a quota of 300 guns monthly. Yuba manufacturing closed in 1973. These buildings represent a high priority for preservation and restoration because of the lack of other surviving industrial buildings from this time frame. The cache is not at the posted coordinates ! The actual coordinates of this cache can be derived by solving the Sudoku puzzle below. While the use of a Sudoku in a puzzle cache is not uncommon, we think you will find this one a bit more challenging than most. Rest assured that it is solvable without any guessing. Undoubtedly some will take a shortcut to accomplish this, forgetting that the journey is as important as the destination. If you do solve the puzzle on your own, feel free to brag about it in your log. N: 38 0J.KLM W: 122 0N.PQR J=A4 K= H2 L=zero M= I7 N= A7 P=H8 Q=G7 R=I9
