This cache is a mint tin hidden amongst a bunch of heroes.
Driving down Albany Highway between the Kendenup turn-off and Mt
Barker you may recognise some road names from history lessons. The
roads were all named around 1920 by CJ De Garis, who was the
charismatic but ultimately unsuccessful promoter of the Kendenup
Development Scheme. His vision was to create a new settlement to
grow apples, potatoes and farm produce.
Today's land developers name their streets Bottlebrush Avenue after
plants which because of wholesale clearing are long gone, or Sirius
Street after stars no longer visible because of light pollution. De
Garis decided to ride the wave of patriotic fervour that swept the
country after WW I. His road names honour mainly Englishmen but
there is one West Australian in there too.
As you come from Perth, the celebrated heroes are:
Smuts, General Jan Christiaan. South African who won victory
over German East Africa
Gough, General Hubert. Commanded British Fifth Army
Jellicoe, Admiral Sir John. Admiral of the Fleet at
Jutland
Beattie, Admiral Earl David. Commander in chief of the
British Grand Fleet
Hobbs, General Sir Talbot. Commanded Australian artillery at
Gallipoli. In civilian life he was an architect whose works
included the King's Park and Villers Bretonneux war memorials
Rawson, General Harry Holdsworth. Led British forces in
Africa at the end of the 19th century including being the commander
in the Anglo Zanzibar war of 1896 which is on record as being the
shortest in history lasting just 38 minutes.
Sturdee, Admiral Sir Frederick. Led the Battle of The
Falklands where all but one German ship was sunk.
Jutland. A naval battle in 1916 which was the largest naval
battle of the war and the only full clash of battleships
Wilson, President Thomas Woodrow. As US President declared
war in 1917, signed armistice and helped create the League of
Nations. Awarded Nobel Peace Prize.
Halsey, William. Lt Commander in charge of the American
Atlantic Fleet torpedo flotilla.
