Letters from the Heart 99509 - REDEUX Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

blazingpathways: Many of the little blue boxes have been decommissioned and the links are difficult to find deep in the Postal Museum archives. Thanks to everyone who worked on solving the Letters from the Heart series through the years. I will pick up the container in the next couple of weeks.

Geocache Description:

The coordinates listed lead you to a little blue USPS box - there is no physical cache at the starting location. Rather, the starting location has an answer to one of the questions that will bring you to the final. Links updated 6/8/13. Links updated and a=1 added 9/2/15.

This is the seventh in a series of caches dedicated to the ever faithful little blue boxes of the US Postal Service. How they seem to blend into my environment until I need one. This faithful servant was not so long ago the gateway to the Railway Post Office. I learned about this on a summer train ride to Denali.

A neat description of flag stop service and rural delivery by the Alaska Railroad to Hurricane Gulch can be found at John's Alaska Railroad website. The link for the website is below.

On the left side of the home page you will find an option that allows you to search. Search the site for "flag stop". Choose the link for Jerry Hardy's 1998 Trip Report. You will need to know the car #'s for a question below.

At the United State Postal Service website, you will find information about the history of rail mail delivery. On the left side of the page you will find links for the creation and the final run.

You will also find the answer to two of the questions below. The other answer is found at the blue USPS mail box that is waiting at the starting coordinates for your visit.

Final: N 61 1a.bcc W 149 5d.eff

a= 1.

b= From Jerry Hardy's Trip Report of Sunday June 28th. Find the car #'s for the dome car and the diner car. Add the first digit of each together.

cc= subtract 1948 from the year the last Railway Post Office made it's run between New York and Washington, D.C.

d= the number of snorkel blue mail boxes at the starting location.

e= add 2 to the number of times the letter "a" appears on this cache page's background picture

ff= subtract 1830 from the year an Act was passed making all railroad lines in the U.S. designated postal routes.

On Valentine's day my letters started their journey by rail. It's time to flag the train down. Are you ready? Bring a writing utensil.
