The Changing Landscape - Stories of Bayside
Taiaotea: where the tide comes in over the land
Maori inhabited this area in substantial numbers when the
Taiaotea Stream and Estuary were alive with birds and kaimoana
(seafood). At that time the sea was “teeming with
seafood”. The Taiaotea Stream meandered from side to side
behind the bay and several small lakes and lagoons dotted the
estuary, where the Browns Bay commercial centre is now.
On the valley floor where Bayside Reserve is today, trees like
Kahikatea and Puriri grew tall and strong in the damp ground. On
the ridges above kauri dominated the skylines while further down
the slopes Rimu, Totara and Nikau palms flourished. The Pohutakawa
forest edged the coastline.
Development of Bayside area began in the 1980’s. It was
described as “a unique opportunity to establish a very
desirable lifestyle” and “a quality environment for
your family”. Bayside Reserve was advertised as “a
potential focal point” of the new neighbourhood.
Cache is a 400ml camo sistema, containing log book, pencil and
swaps.
