Geocache Description:

[This is a puzzle cache -- the coordinates above are not where the cache is located, but it is within walking distance of that location.]

Find the page of the index on which his name appears. What is the first digit of this page's page number? (not the page number referred to by the index entry) Every Spring, the Cary Memorial Library in Lexington hosts a "Lexington Reads" program. The theme of the 2011 program is "Let Nature Be Our Teacher" and includes a talk by Paul Gillin to introduce people to Geocaching. This cache was developed in conjunction with that program and would be a good "first puzzle" for anyone interested in trying their hand at puzzle caches.

The coordinates posted above are for the front entrance of the Cary Memorial Library. To find the cache, you will need to visit the library, find some information there, then use that information to fill in the coordinates below to identify where the cache container is actually located.

The cache container is at:
N 42° 26.ABC W 071° 13.DEF
where the missing digits can be filled in by answering these questions:
  • A = In the Reading Room, how many large wooden beams are there in the ceiling?
  • B = On the top floor, find a large safe labeled with a street address for "Arthur B. Curtis". What is the first digit of the street number?
  • C = In the Oval Room, there is a a panel over the fireplace commemorating Maria Hastings Cary, founder of Cary Library. On this panel, there are 2 years listed. What is the third digit of the later year?
  • On the reference shelf, find the "History of the Town of Lexington. Volume II-Genealogies" by Charles Hudson, REF 974.44L H867H. [Note: The volume is somewhat old, please handle it with care!] Use it to answer the questions below:
    • D = In the index, find the page that lists "Jonas Clarke", for whom Clarke Middle School is named (he was a pastor who was present at the standoff at Lexington Green shortly before the shots that started the Revolutionary War were fired). What is the first digit of this index page's page number? (not the page number referred to by the index entry).
    • E = In the index, find the page that lists "Nathaniel Bowman", for whom Bowman Elementary School is named. What is the third digit of this index page's page number? (not the page number referred to by the index entry).
    • F = In the index, find the page that lists "William Diamond", for whom Diamond Middle School is named (he was the 16-year-old drummer for the Lexington Minutemen during the Battle of Lexington and Concord). What is the third digit of this index page's page number? (not the page number referred to by the index entry).

The cache location is easily walkable from the library (at least when there isn't too much snow). The cache location is quite public, stealth may be required retrieving it.

The cache is a log-only film canister, bring your own pencil. You don't need to move anything to find the container. When replacing it, please make sure that the container is not visible.

[Congrats to gw0143 on FTF!!!]

The hint below is for the cache location, not the puzzle and is somewhat of a giveaway.
