Operation Chastise
The motivation for this puzzle (research) cache was inspired by a walk through Trentham Memorial Park, where a sight vaguely similar to the above photo was seen, albeit on a very small scale. The photo depicts the results of the famous Dambuster Raid carried out by the RAF's 617 Squadron in 1943. With the knowledge that the Upper Hutt RSA were soon to be placing a new war memorial at TMP, this cache was born.
The two-metre-square war memorial sign, incorporates a refurbished mural that for decades was at the former RSA headquarters, and includes a depiction of the workhorse of this famous raid, the Avro Lancaster Bomber, one of which was flown by a New Zealand pilot, Les Munro. At the time of placing this cache, Squadron Leader (Ret.) Munro is the last surviving pilot of the Dambuster's Raid...
About the cache
The cache is a camo'd small sized container and is big enough to contain a logsheet, pencil, sharpener and geocoins. You may wish to bring your own writing implement just in case the pencil goes missing in action.
The published cache co-ordinates bring you the location of the newly unveiled Upper Hutt RSA war memorial sign at Trentham Memorial Park on Fergusson Drive. However, the cache is not placed there. To locate the final co-ordinates for this cache, you'll need to puzzle your way through the following questions and do some research on the Dambuster's Raid to reveal the missing co-ordinates!
S 41 0A.BBC
A = At what altitude was the bouncing bomb dropped? (in metres, second digit)
B = How many bombers participated in the raid? (2 digits)
C = How many aircrew participated in the raid? (first digit)
E175 DE.FGH
D = How many Distinguished Flying Crosses were awarded after the raid? (second digit)
E = How many bombers returned from the raid? (second digit)
F = What was the air speed (km/h) at which the bomb had to be released? (second digit)
G = How many dams were breached? (number x 2)
H = How many aircrew were killed during the raid? (first digit)
You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.
About the location
The cache area can have muggles popping up without warning so stealth must be practiced when searching for and replacing the cache!
Please make sure that the cache is replaced *exactly* as found (with suitable concealment) as we don't want this to go MIA!
Logging your Find
I am using a log sheet for all Geocachers to record their discoveries, and when it is full, I will scan the logsheet and attach its image to this cache as an archive. Please let me know when the logsheet is nearing maintenance time and I will supply a new sheet.
