The Torbay Hall was established in 1912 in the little town which is named after a bay on the coast that is south of the town, believed to be named by Governor James Stirling in 1831 after Torbay in Devon. The area was initially utilised for its timber and had a number of sawmills operating close by. In 1889 a railway was constructed and one of the stations was named Torbay. By 1889, however, most of the timber had been felled and removed and the government acquired the land from its owners, Millars Karri and Jarrah Forests Ltd. The land was subdivided and sold for agricultural purposes in 1900 but some was set aside for a town site. The town of Torbay was gazetted in 1910. The hall was used for agricultural shows, social and sports meetings, but today it is mainly used for social gatherings for the local people.
There is a lovely little Nature Trail leaving from the Hall which has great wildflower displays, especially during September/October.
Check out the plaque at the rear right of the hall to see where the old school used to be. The building can now be found at the Residency Museum in Albany.
While you are out that way, too, it is worthwhile investigating the beautiful beaches in the Torbay area – Perkins Beach, Torbay Inlet, Cosy Corner, and the near-by Shelley Beach.
The cache is a little way from the hall so as to avoid "Follow the Blue Wren cache. It contains a log and pen, and scratchies for the FTF. Please hide the cache again carefully. Have fun!
