While this isn't the town of Bedford Falls, and George and Zuzu Bailey never lived here, there was a Mr Thomas Benton Potter and his son Thomas Irving Potter who founded the town of Bayocean in 1906 on Tillamook Spit. While you're here, ring a bell!
Bayoceans's post office was established on February 4, 1909, and by 1914, the town's population was 2000. Bayocean had paved and lighted streets, a private railroad used for construction and "joy rides," a post office, a public school, a bakery and other businesses, and a luxury three-story hotel (equipped with automatic fire sprinklers). The resort also had a 160-foot-long heated saltwater pool built on the beach at the line of the first dune, complete with a waterfall and an electric wave machine to create artificial surf “so real in its action as to fool Old Neptune himself!" Only a few decades later however, Bayocean had become a ghost town. By 1920 the spit, and the town, had begun to slip into the sea. It was a slow process, but one that couldn't be stopped. One by one, the buildings vanished into the ocean, and one by one the people left Bayocean. By the late 1930's the remaining buildings were largely empty. The sea made an inland of what little was left of the town in 1952, and it was essentially inaccessible by 1953. If you are on a quest to discover the caches of this ghost town, this is a great place to start! This is a small container containing only a log. Please bring your own writing utensil. It's possible that a log extraction device may be helpful. Grats to FTF Wrong Way Smurf!
