The Bluegill Trail is a multi-use 10-foot wide shell rock path
for bicycle, pedestrian and equestrian access through the
Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area. It offers multi-user access to
four conservation lands and visitor facilities: the Loxahatchee
Slough Natural Area, Riverbend Park, Sandhill Crane Access Park,
and Grassy Waters Preserve. The trail presents excellent views into
the major marshes comprising the Loxahatchee Slough. Watch for the
many wading birds that visit the slough, such as Great Blue Herons,
Great Egrets, Wood Storks and Roseate Spoonbills. You may also see
an Alligator or two. Amenities include a chickee shade shelter,
four informational kiosks and native trees for habitat and
shade.
This trail is managed by the Palm Beach County Environmental
Resources Management Department. The Bluegill Trail is for use by
hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. No motorized vehicles are
allowed. With a little bit of planning, and two vehicles, you can
start at either Riverbend Park to the north, or Sandhill Crane
Access Park to the south, and make a one-way trip of about eight
miles to find all the caches in this series. Otherwise, double your
mileage to about sixteen miles.
