WWFM VIII: Mob Mania and Mentos Mayhem Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

JJG10101: Alrighty, it's been four weeks since the mayhem, time to close the book on this one. Thanks again to all who attended! It was a very fun event to organize. But I wonder: what would've happened if just one bottle tipped over, and pointed right at the audience?? I'm guessing we would have had the makings of a seriously viral video on our hands!

What's in store for next time? Hmmn, let me think, let.. me.. think. ;-) See you on the trail or at the next event.--JJG

Geocache Description:

It's a worldwide event, it's *the* flash mob happening.. it's WWFM VIII: Mob Mania and Mentos Mayhem!

About WWFM: No, it's not the classical radio station in New Jersey, it's an acronym for "World Wide Flash Mob." As developed by Sonny and Sandy of the PodCacher podcast, it's a series of simultaneous caching events designed to raise awareness and have fun.

Flash mobs are mini-happenings, consisting of large groups of people that suddenly appear in public, perform some sort of brief action, then disperse. One of the first events took place in 2003, when over 100 people suddenly appeared in the home furnishings department of Macy's and gathered around an expensive rug. When asked if they needed assistance, someone replied that they were shopping for a "love rug" and made purchase decisions as a group! Other flash mob events include Worldwide Pillow Fight Day and the "Critical Mass" bicycle gatherings in San Francisco.

This time around, we'll be meeting at Altisima Park in Rancho Santa Margarita. It's a large park near the border of RSM and Mission Viejo, and offers easy access to the 241 and 133. It's where the "10 Years! Rancho Santa Margarita, CA" (GC253D8) event was held, if that helps. ;-) Once again, the time limit for the event is a mere 15 minutes. There's bound to be new caches placed, before- and after-event runs, and lots of other related activities.

DATE: Saturday, June 4, 2011
TIME: 11:00 A.M. to 11:15 A.M.
LOCATION: Altisima Park, Rancho Santa Margarita

So here's the plan: in order to entertain the locals, we're going to create a fabulous Diet Coke/Mentos display. If you would, please bring a 2-liter bottle of warm* Diet Coke to the event. We'll supply the Mentos candies, geyser attachment, and technical support. With any luck, our spectacular "Mentos Mayhem" display will look just like the dancing-water fountains at the Bellagio in Vegas. ;-)

If you haven't seen what a Diet Coke/Mentos display looks like, click here to see a crazy one!

Special thanks, as always, to Sonny and Sandy for developing and promoting the WWFM events. It's an event that's here and gone in a flash, it's WWFM VIII: Mob Mania and Mentos Mayhem!

*=Why does the Diet Coke need to be warm? For whatever reason, the geyser reaction works best with warm soda; attempting the experiment with cold stuff results in a geyser about six inches in height. That wouldn't be terribly impressive!
