The cache is near the Sterling Forest fire tower which offers excellent views of the surrounding area. To the southwest you can see Greenwood Lake and a narrow sliver of Monksville Reservoir. To the southeast the NYC skyline is visible.
The view to the north and northwest offers the "Gunks" and Schunemunk Mtn and on a very clear day the Catskills and Berkshires are visible.
The fire tower was erected in 1922 and ceased operation in 1988. From what I read it was put back into active service in 1999 and is currently the only active fire tower in New York State. The tower is topped by a 7 x 7 steel cabin.
