Geocache Description:

A short multi at St John's Toft church and Windmill Wood. A round trip of about 1/2 km.

This attractive church is a mid-Victorian construction of Cheshire sandstone built by Mrs Leycester in memory of her husband the squire of Toft Hall. Its stained glass windows are particularly notable, including original windows by the renowned Parisian manufacturers Antoine Lusson and a modern series installed for the new millennium in the North aisle. For more details see Wikipedia entry: St John the Evangelist's Church, Toft.

Take a closer look around the church from outside to answer the following questions.

A: Look high up at the hopper heads that connect the downpipes to the guttering. Their date of manufacture is 185A.

B: Look low down on the wall in the South West corner. You will see an Ordnance Survey cut benchmark. This shape is made up of three vertical/diagonal and B horizontal lines.

C: The large East window has C panels in it. Some of them are tall arched panels and some small round motif panels.

D: The main North aisle wall has D equal sized arched windows, each with two arched and one round motif panel. (Ignore the other smaller windows in the North wall of the Chancel at the East end of the church.)

E: Benjamin Barton Lee's gravestone near the main church entrance shows that he died aged 1E years.

F: Percy Walter Knowles' gravestone in the front row on your right as you return to the car park shows that he was born on 3rd March 19F9.

Now follow the permissive footpath from the published coordinates - the information sign at the other end of the church car park - into Windmill Wood where you will find the cache at N53 17.ABC W002 21.DEF.
